CHP Patrols Bolstered: The California Highway Patrol will increase its patrols by 25% this holiday weekend in an effort to curb accidents caused by drunk driving. The annual “drunk driver enforcement period” began Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will continue until midnight Sunday, Orange County CHP spokesman Paul Caldwell said. “We will have 75% of the entire force out on the roads during the peak times,” between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., Caldwell said, adding that he expects more incidents this year because of the longer holiday period. Last year’s Independence Day fell on a Wednesday.
