Preparations for a 10-kilometer foot race planned for Aug. 4 in Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano can get under way since the City Council’s unanimous approval of course changes requested by the organizers.

Following the new course, runners in the U. S. Triathlon Series will begin at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, head north along Del Obispo Street and change direction twice in San Juan Capistrano, before returning to Del Obispo for the final leg back to the beach.

Although no streets will be closed for the race, extra traffic police will be on hand. CAT Sports Inc., the Encinitas firm organizing the race, will be required to post a $7,500 deposit with San Juan Capistrano to cover the cost of the traffic control.

It will be the first time that Orange County communities have played host to the race, which has been run in Long Beach the last three years, Cathy Hoy of CAT Sports said. As many as a 1,000 runners are expected to compete in this year’s race, she added.
