Former heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott will be honored here July 24 for his contributions to boxing.

Walcott, 71, won the title on July 18, 1951 at the age of 37, when he knocked out Ezzard Charles in the seventh round. His career spanned 23 years, in which he compiled a 50-18-1 record with 30 knockouts.

After his retirement, Walcott became the sheriff of Camden, N.J., then served as chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. He stepped down from that position in 1984.
