The chief negotiator for baseball club owners today sharply rejected two points of Commissioner Peter Ueberroth’s “potential solutions,” saying he will continue to “negotiate financial matters . . . in the same manner as any American business or industry.”

Lee MacPhail said he would continue to review five proposals, including dropping a proposed salary cap, made by Ueberroth in an attempt to avert a strike called for Tuesday.

But he expressed “sharp disagreement” on two points: that owners should stop blaming players for their financial difficulties and that owners put $45 million in escrow while the two sides negotiate how much is to contributed to the players’ pension fund.

Negotiations were at a standstill today. The two sides have not met since Wednesday, and no further meetings were scheduled.
