Waldorf Wins Broadmoor Invitational

Defending champion Duffy Waldorf of Tarzana defeated Brandt Jobe of Littleton 1-up in match play Thursday during the second day of the Broadmoor Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament in Colorado.

Waldorf, 22, was voted ’85 NCAA Player of the Year while playing for UCLA. Jobe, 19, is the 1984-85 Colorado match-play champion.

In another match involving two UCLA golfers, Brad Greer, 24, of Huntington Beach, went 2-1 over Jim Detrixhe, 25, of Santa Monica.

Jerry Haas, 21, Belleville, Ill., defeated Matt Potter, 21, of Lakewood, 3-2. Haas plays for Wake Forest and Potter was the low amateur in last week’s Colorado Open.

Quarterfinals are Friday on the par-72, 7,154-yard Broadmoor East course.

American Roundball Wins Las Vegas Tournament

The American Roundball Corp. continued its tradition of domination at the Las Vegas Invitational all-star basketball tournament when its Mid-Valley entry won the title last week with an 85-65 victory over Kentucky.

It was the fourth time in eight years that an ARC team had won the tournament, which was played at Nevada Las Vegas. It was the sixth time an ARC team had been in the finals.

Mid-Valley guard Steve Thompson, a 6-3 sophomore out of Crenshaw High, was the tournament’s MVP, averaging 25 points per game in his team’s five victories.

Cleveland forward Trevor Wilson, who averaged 15 points a game in the tournament, had 13 points and 9 rebounds in the championship game. Shawn Higgins of Fairfax averaged 17 points a game for Mid-Valley, and Simi Valley’s Don MacLean and Alemany’s James Moses each averaged eight points.

Mid-Valley fielded the youngest team in the tournament, with three freshmen and two sophomores.

The ARC is well represented in the National Basketball Assn. Byron Scott of the Los Angeles Lakers played on the 1978 team that included Darren Daye of Kennedy High and the Washington Bullets, Leon Wood of the Philadelphia 76ers and Stuart Gray of Kennedy High.

Sports Festival Highlights

Alice Brown of Panorama City timed 11.07 to win the 100 meters at the National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge, La. The 12-day affair ends Sunday.

The victory highlighted local efforts at the meeting of the nation’s top amateur athletes.

The south womens’ national volleyball team, with Calabasas’ Jeannine Fenske, finished second behind the west team after five sets. The west mens’ team, with Calabasas’ Bill Suara, also finished second, taking a silver medal in the event.

Canoga Park’s Carol Davidson improved her record to 3-0 in women’s singles table tennis. Davidson also teamed with Nevada’s Dean Noble to post a 2-1 victory in mixed doubles pool play.

Simi Valley’s Jim Sabelis scored two goals and George Salas and Moorpark’s Hein Ho each scored one to the lead the West to a 4-0 field hockey victory over the North Sunday.
