Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello and Wilfred Benitez, former boxing champions who together earned about $6 million in the ring, are all broke, according to Jose Torres, New York state boxing commissioner.

“My information is that all three are broke, in unbelievable situations,” Torres said.

Benitez filed for bankruptcy in Puerto Rico recently. Arguello has acknowledged having financial problems. Duran has denied recent press reports in Panama that he is in economic difficulty.

Torres said: “I’ve been told it’s only a matter of months before Duran will have to admit his serious economic situation.”

Duran, 34, held lightweight, welterweight and junior-middleweight world titles and has been training in Miami for a comeback.

Arguello, 33, former featherweight, junior-lightweight and lightweight title-holder, also is considering a comeback. He retired after being knocked out by Aaron Pryor in 1983.

Benitez, 27, was a junior-welterweight, welterweight and junior-middleweight champion. Benitez has a bout scheduled in New York Aug. 21 but is insisting on advance payment for the fight.
