A rare Indian rhinoceros at the Los Angeles Zoo gave birth Sunday to a 90-pound infant after a record-setting 515-day pregnancy, zoo officials announced today. The mother’s first pregnancy lasted 496 days, Lora LaMarca, curator of education and information for the zoo, said. There are between 1,100 and 1,600 Indian rhinoceroses alive, and only 10 zoos in the nation have the species on exhibit, she said.
