Bob Roll, a little-known cyclist from Pleasant Hill, Calif., shot to the lead with half a lap to go to win the Vail, Colo., Criterium stage of the Coors International bicycle races.

The second-place rider, Stephane Guay of France, was well behind Roll at the finish, having fallen to Roll’s attack on the final hill.

Davis Phinney, of Boulder, Colo., was third after leading much of the race.

Greg LeMond of Reno remained the overall leader. He is 1 minute 45 seconds ahead of Andy Hampsten of Boulder, Colo.

In the 30-mile women’s race, Valerie Simonnet of France, helped along by race leader and teammate Jeannie Longo, was first in the Criterium. Longo blocked out Inga Thompson of Reno.
