Newport Beach : Public Input Sought on Coastline Compromise
- Share via
Area residents can attend a special meeting of the City Council Thursday that will update residents on the compromise plan recently conceived by the U.S. Department of the Interior and the California Congressional delegation. The plan would open large areas of local coastline to oil exploration.
No action will be taken at the 7:30 p.m. meeting, but public testimony will be gathered and relayed to U.S. Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel when he arrives in Orange County for a meeting with local officials Aug. 31.
In addition, copies of a petition being circulated by Save Our Shores, a Laguna Beach-based group formed to fight the offshore drilling plan, will be available at the Newport Beach city clerk’s office, 3300 W. Newport Blvd.
Verna Rollinger, Laguna Beach city clerk, said that about 16,000 people have already signed the petition.
