A body was found here Saturday near the base of Glacier Point after a camper reported seeing something fall from the towering granite block, a park spokeswoman said.

A search of the area for a second body by a crew of about 35 people and two helicopters was called off temporarily because of rain and weather forecasts of possible lightning in the Yosemite Valley, spokeswoman Sharon Johnson said.

Several Yosemite hikers were killed by lightning recently when they continued climbing in a storm despite weather warnings.

Few details about the incident were released by the National Park Service. The body was found about two-thirds of the way down Glacier Point on one of a series of ledges, Johnson said.

The Park Service had no information about any personal belongings found at the top of the point. “They’re investigating that whole area,” she said.

“A camper down in Yosemite Valley observed what he thought to be someone either falling or jumping from Glacier Point,” Johnson said, adding that the report came in about 8 a.m. A body was found about 90 minutes later.

“We don’t know for sure if a second person was involved,” she said.

The park was full of campers and visitors Saturday, with all campsites and lodgings reserved, Johnson said. She estimated that on a busy summer day Yosemite hosts almost 20,000 people.
