Steve Cram of Britain raced to an easy victory in the men’s 1,500 meters on the first day of the two-day European Athletic Cup track and field meet at Moscow. But he finished more than 14 seconds off his world record.
Cram’s time was 3 minutes 43.71 seconds; second-place finisher Olaf Byer of East Germany was timed in 3:44.96. Cram’s record of 3:29.67 was set July 16 at Nice, France.
Zola Budd of Britain won the women’s 3,000 meters in 8:35.32, surpassing the British national record of 8:37.06 set by Wendy Sly in 1983.
