Sabrina Mar Wins Senior Division at National Gymnastics Championships

Sabrina Mar of the Southern California Acro Team won the senior division (15 and over), all-around competition Friday at the Elite National Gymnastics Championships in Atlanta.

Mar, of Monterey Park, scored 74.58 to edge Jennifer Sey of the Parkettes (74.34). SCATS’ Marie Roethliesberger (73.88) placed third.

The top 10 finishers became members of the U.S National Team and qualified for the world championship trials, Sept. 28 in Minneapolis. Also qualifying from SCATS was Jennifer Ferreira of Long Beach, who placed seventh, and Gina Satterly, 10th.

Eight gymnasts, six competitors and two alternates, will be selected to represent the United States at the world championships in Montreal in October. SCATS elite Coach Don Peters will coach the U.S. team.

Two other SCATS members, Jennifer Barton and Dee Dee Foster, both of Huntington Beach, placed first and second, respectively, in the junior division (age 13).

Barton won the all-around competition with a 75.30. Foster scored 72.30. They qualified for the junior elite championships in Salt Lake City, Sept. 14. Also qualifying from SCATS was Kristine Johnson of Pasadena, who was seventh, and Amy Thorne of Huntington Beach, eighth.
