A San Diego police officer was splashed in the face with the narcotic PCP while trying to make an arrest Saturday in the 900 block of South 45th Street, a police spokesman said. Officer Robert W. Hovey was taken by paramedics to Mercy Hospital, where the narcotic was flushed from his eyes. He was treated and released along with two other officers who were splashed on the arm and hand.

The officers had been in the process of arresting William James Flournoy, 27, who became violent and threw a vial of PCP at Hovey, police said. Flournoy was detained and taken to UCSD Medical Center for treatment because police suspected he was under the influence of PCP. Police said he would be booked on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale, being under the influence of narcotics and assault with a deadly weapon.
