A bottle of Gatorade containing urea, which made a Santa Clara man sick, was the only one contaminated, state health officials said, as a chain of nearly 200 stores across six Western states removed the beverage from its shelves. “We believe that it was a highly isolated incident to one Longs Drug Store in Santa Clara,” Bill Ihle of the Department of Health Services said. Urea is a crystalline solid found in urine. It is produced synthetically and used in making plastics, fertilizer and adhesives. Longs officials told their 23 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area late Thursday to pull Gatorade from the shelves as a precaution. The contamination was a result of tampering, officials have said. Firefighter Gregory Phillips, complaining of headaches, dizziness and nausea, was hospitalized briefly after drinking Gatorade.
