The Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Assn. are looking for a new practice home but are no longer considering the Aviation High School gym in Redondo Beach, team officials said this week.

A spokesman for Clippers General ManagerCarl Scheer said the probable site now is the new YMCA at Century Boulevard and Vermont Avenue. The Clippers, who moved from San Diego to Los Angeles last season, shared Loyola Marymount University facilities with the Lakers but objected to the favored status the Lakers received, and said the Lakers had paid an exclusive rights fee for this season.

Aviation had been under consideration but the Clippers did not like the gym floor and apparently could not reach an agreement with Redondo Beach for using the facility, which was left standing when most of the campus was razed.

The Clippers, who play their regular season games at the Sports Arena, are using Cal Poly Pomona for their training camp.

A Loyola spokesman said the Lakers signed an increased rental contract this year and have always enjoyed favored status, but said the Lakers do not have exclusivity. In fact, the Loyola team still has first priority.

Deborah Thurston, a former basketball and track letter winner at UCLA, has been named cross-country coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. She takes over from Jeff Tribole, who resigned. Thurston will coach both the men’s and women’s teams. She also will act as an assistant coach for women’s basketball.

Thurston, a native of East St. Louis, Ill., was a high school All-American in basketball at Lincoln High and led the track team to three state titles. At UCLA she was a four-year varsity basketball player and ran track for two seasons. She graduated in 1984 with a degree in sociology. Since then she has served as track and basketball coach at Los Angeles City College.

The school also announced that it will not compete in track in 1986. The Toros do not have 14 athletes, the NCAA minimum for a track team.

Westchester resident Missy Kurt has been selected to the U.S. Volleyball Assn. Pacific Rim women’s team which is competing in Hilo, Hawaii, in an international tournament. Kurt, 16, earned all-CIF honors as a sophomore last season at Notre Dame Academy in West Los Angeles and played varsity basketball and softball, earning Times All-Westside honors in basketball. She is a member of the Tiger Gold Volleyball Club of Santa Fe Springs which recently won the USVBA Junior Olympic championship for 17-year-olds and under. That was the basis for her selection to the Pacific tournament team.

The doubles teams of Carlos Gutierrez and Gary Seefried, Janet Bezmalinovich and Lisa Ogren and Alan Viewig and Stephanie London were the big winners in the seventh round of the South Bay Tennis Grand Prix, held at Alta Vista tennis courts in Redondo Beach.

Gutierrez and Seefried won the top men’s division, defeating Karl Thompson and Rich Johnson, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Seefried also teamed with Thompson to win the men’s 40-plus division. Bezmalinovich and Ogren defeated Nancy and Betsy Skidmore to win the women’s top division, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Viewig and London defeated Allen Bond and Carolyn Dadian, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6, in the mixed open.

Starling Steel, led by former Cal State Long Beach star Michael Wiley, won the Lite-NBA Pro-Am League at Inglewood High over the weekend, defeating Gator Limo, which featured former Inglewood star Russell Brown. Sunny Nike won the consolation third-place game.
