Orange County Beach Volleyball : Smith and Stoklos Win Their Second Straight Tournament

Second-seeded Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos defeated defending world champions Andy Fishburn and Jay Hanseth, 15-13, to win the $13,000 Miller High Life Orange County Open Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday at Seal Beach.

The victory was the second straight for Smith and Stoklos, who won last week’s Hawaiian Open at Waikiki. Earlier this season, they won the Laguna Beach and San Diego opens.

In winners’ bracket play on Sunday, Smith and Stoklos beat Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby, 15-5, in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, top-seeded Tim Hovland and Mike Dodd defeated Fishburn and Hanseth, 15-8. In the winners’ bracket final, Smith and Stoklos beat Hovland and Dodd, 15-12.

Fishburn and Hanseth came back to beat Hovland and Dodd, 15-3, to win the losers’ bracket.

Smith and Stoklos will split $4,450 in winnings. Fishburn and Hanseth won $2,470 and Hovland and Dodd won $1,560.

A crowd of 5,000 watched Sunday’s action.

This was the 13th of 15 stops on the Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Next week is the Tournament of Champions at Ventura State Beach, which will be followed by the Jose Cuervo World Championships at Redondo Beach.
