The Long Beach Public Safety Day Fair, which drew thousands of people last year, will be held Saturday as the city opens a new North Long Beach police substation.

The fair, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Scherer Park, 4800 Atlantic Ave., will stress good relations between citizens and public safety agencies, organizers said.

The 1,600-square-foot North Police Facility at Scherer will be opened simultaneously.

Helicopters, firefighting equipment, illegal weapons and seized drugs are to be displayed at the fair. A demonstration by the canine corps, a self-defense class and a program by the Long Beach Junior Concert Band are also scheduled. Children with bicycles may participate in a bike safety rodeo.
