Tennis Roundup : Lendl Romps in First Match Since U.S. Open

U.S. Open champion Ivan Lendl routed Lawson Duncan, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the second round of the $117,000 Mercedes Cup tournament Wednesday at Stuttgart, West Germany.

Playing for the first time since beating John McEnroe to win his first U.S. title Sunday, Lendl needed just 52 minutes to beat Duncan.

In second-round play, Brad Gilbert ousted Juan Aguilera of Spain, 7-6, 6-3; Jose-Luis Clerc of Argentina beat Brian Teacher, 6-2, 6-1, and Andreas Maurer of Czechoslovakia defeated Matt Mitchell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Gene Mayer upset second-seeded Scott Davis, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the Du Pont All-American Championship at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

In the other quarterfinal match, fourth-seeded David Pate beat Aaron Krickstein, 7-6, 6-4.

Qualifier Caroline Kuhlman upset No. 7-seeded Mary Lou Piatek, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round of the $75,000 Virginia Slims of Utah tournament at Salt Lake City.

No. 3 Diane Fromholtz-Balestrat of Australia defeated Candy Reynolds, 6-2, 6-2, and Lisa Bonder eliminated South African Yvonne Vermaak, 6-4, 6-0.

Top-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden trounced Jorge Bardou of Spain, 6-1, 6-0, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the $100,000 Sicilian Open at Palermo, Sicily.
