San Diego State May Add Nebraska, Auburn to Schedule

If negotiations go well, San Diego State could be playing football games against Nebraska and Auburn in the early 1990s.

The Aztecs may only be a phone call away from playing at Nebraska on Sept. 12, 1992. With Auburn, there is the possibility of a home-and-home series sometime between 1992 and 1995.

Bob Devaney, Nebraska’s athletic director, said his team had dates to fill when Arkansas canceled games from 1991 to 1994. Three of the dates have been taken, but the 1992 game remains open.

“If San Diego State called to play in Lincoln and accepted the guarantee we’d pay them, I’d probably just send them a contract,” Devaney said.

Devaney, a former Nebraska head coach, said the Cornhuskers originally offered to play SDSU in 1991 and 1992. However, another team has verbally agreed to play at Nebraska in 1991. Devaney said he would not specify the team until he had received a signed contract.

Mary Alice Hill, SDSU’s former athletic director, wanted to play Nebraska on a home-and-home series, according to Devaney. However, Devaney said Nebraska was only looking for home games against the Aztecs.

Robert Rinehart, SDSU’s interim athletic director, was cautious in discussing possible games. Rinehart said he did not want people to think he was rushing into negotiations for games against the likes of Nebraska.

“If 1992 is there and we can work it out for Sept. 12, that’d be fine,” Rinehart said. “Maybe the ball’s in our court. We have some thinking and counseling to do before we decide.”
