Top-seeded Ivan Lendl, the U.S. Open champion, routed Brad Gilbert, 6-4, 6-0, Sunday to win the $117,000 Mercedes Cup tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.

The 25-year-old Czechoslovakian dominated throughout the match, quickly taking the first three games and then reaching a 5-2 advantage with a break in the first set.

But the 24-year-old Gilbert, from Piedmont, Calif., third-seeded in the tournament, broke Lendl’s serve and picked up two straight games to struggle to 5-4.

However, Lendl broke back to take the set and crushed Gilbert with a relentless series of accurate base-line shots to take the second set in just 15 minutes of play.

Lendl took home $20,000 for his victory, while Gilbert collected $10,000.

Playing in just her second tournament as a professional, 15-year-old Stephanie Rehe breezed past Camille Benjamin, 6-2, 6-4, to win the Virginia Slims of Utah tournament at Salt Lake City.

Rehe, a high school sophomore from Highland, Calif., earned $12,000 for her effort in the $75,000 tournament.

Thierry Tulasne of France trounced top-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-3, 6-1, in the final of the 34th Sicily International at Palermo, Sicily.

Nystrom came back in the doubles final with British partner Colin Dowdeswell to beat the Spanish team of Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
