A security guard at a Los Angeles Muslim temple was sentenced to two years in prison for the October, 1983, beating and strangulation death of a Los Angeles man during a heated argument over a bean pie outside the Nation of Islam sanctuary. James Bailey, 41, of Inglewood, was sentenced by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Everett E. Ricks Jr., who convicted Bailey of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Dwain E. Keith during a February non-jury trial. According to court testimony, Keith, 36, had accompanied a friend, Eddie Rogers, to the Elijah Muhammad Temple at 4137 S. Crenshaw Blvd. in the hope of purchasing a bean pie. A fight ensued between Rogers, Keith, Bailey and three other men after Bailey told Rogers that no pies were available. The three were acquitted in the murder of Keith, who was apparently strangled with his own necktie.
