Council OKs Plan to Set Aside Park ‘Dog Runs’

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday gave final approval to an ordinance enabling the city Recreation and Parks Department to set up “dog runs” in some city parks. Assuming the measure is approved by the mayor as expected, the parks department can proceed with working out details for the project. Under the concept offered by Councilman Joel Wachs, dog owners would be allowed to let their animals off their leashes in designated areas of certain city parks.

The proposal grew from a dispute over loose dogs in a park in Wachs’ Studio City district. The parks department will come up with a list of proposed dog-run parks, but the final decision will be made by the council.
