John (Hot Rod) Williams, the former Tulane basketball star who was charged with sports bribery, has signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team said Friday.

“We have signed John Williams to a contract and, in keeping with our policy, we will not disclose its terms,” Cavalier General Manager Harry Weltman said. “Like all contracts, John’s is subject to approval by the National Basketball Assn.” Williams, 24, was the Cavaliers’ second-round draft pick, the 45th selection overall in the NBA draft.

Williams’ point-shaving trial in New Orleans ended in a mistrial last month when a judge ruled that prosecutors failed to disclose evidence that might have been beneficial to Williams’ defense. Prosecutors have asked a state appeals court to let them retry Williams on the charges.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the contract is believed to be for four years and worth approximately $500,000.
