An attempted robbery of patrons in an East Los Angeles cafe early Sunday left one man in critical condition with a gunshot wound in the chest and one robbery suspect in critical condition with a bullet lodged in his brain, deputies said.

Two armed men walked into Dora’s Cafe, 4722 E. Olympic Blvd., at about 1:30 a.m. and began robbing customers, Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Adams said. Louis Sube, 31, of East Los Angeles was shot in the neck, abdomen and arm when he attempted to resist, Adams said.

Alleged holdup man Rafael Gonzales, 25, of Maywood was shot with his own gun during a struggle with other patrons. The second gunman fled on foot and is still at large. Both the victim and suspect were taken to County-USC Medical Center.
