Share

The eighth game of the world chess championship in Moscow between champion Anatoly Karpov and challenger Gary Kasparov ended in a draw Wednesday. The second session of the game, which began on Tuesday, lasted only 11 minutes.

Karpov leads in games, 2 to 1. There have been five draws, each counting half a point, and the overall score is 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. If neither player succeeds in scoring six wins, then the leader after 24 games wins the match.

Game 8 followed the course of several games of the 1984 match for 15 moves, until Karpov, playing white, introduced the new move 16 Qd3. Soon he won a pawn, but Kasparov never appeared to be in danger of losing. When the game was adjourned after white’s 41st move, the position was clearly drawn. Play resumes today.
