Volleyball Roundup : SDSU Upsets UC Santa Barbara in Volleyball

Sally Larsen had 13 kills and Jackie Mendez added 12 kills to lead the No. 8-ranked San Diego State women’s volleyball team to its seventh consecutive victory, 15-6, 16-14, 15-3, over No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara Friday night at Peterson Gym.

The Aztecs, who boasted a .429 hitting percentage in the match, improved to 2-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., and 14-2 overall. UCSB fell to 2-1 and 9-5. SDSU continues play in the PCAA today, taking on No. 4-ranked San Jose State in Peterson Gym at 2:30. The Spartans were a Final Four team a year ago.

The University of San Diego lost its West Coast Athletic Conference opener at Nevada Reno, 15-5, 15-2, 15-5.

The Wolfpack women (1-0, 3-8) had little trouble overcoming the Toreros (0-1, 3-7) behind the efforts of outside hitters Susan Denison and Stacy Johnson.

Johnson scored 11 kills and had 5 solo blocks for Nevada Reno, while Denison had 8 kills and 4 service aces.

Gina Trapletti led USD with four kills and four digs.

The Toreros return to action Monday at home against Boise State. Nevada Reno, meanwhile, hosts another San Diego team and conference opponent, U.S. International, tonight.
