About 1,000 volunteers are needed to hand-seed 3,000 acres of land blackened in July’s devastating Lexington Reservoir fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the U.S. Soil Conservation Service said. “The only way we’ll get the hand-seeding done is with volunteers,” spokeswoman Jean Gualano said of the operation, dubbed “Project Mudbuster.” “This Saturday, we’ll concentrate on reseeding firebreaks that were bulldozed. These sites are completely void of vegetation and the soil has been disturbed, making it very susceptible to erosion.”
