A woman, apparently upset because she couldn’t find a newspaper, allegedly shot and killed a 12-year-old girl Monday night, police reported.

Officers who were summoned to the scene found the body of Denise Lashon Hill in her home on the 3100 block of 39th Street, said Lt. Paul Ybarrondo.

The girl’s grandfather, John Robinson, told police that his stepdaughter, Regina Taylor, became angry about 10:30 p.m. when she was unable to find a newspaper. While Robinson was in another room, the woman apparently went into a bedroom and retrieved a small-gauge shotgun.

Robinson told investigators that, after hearing a shot, he ran to the living room and found his granddaughter lying over the couch with a wound to the head.

“He said that his stepdaughter then attempted to reload the gun but he was able wrestle it away,” Ybarrondo said.

Taylor, 23, then called the emergency 911 number. Police booked Taylor at the Las Colinas County Jail on suspicion of murder, Ybarrondo said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
