Golf Roundup : Second 64 Puts Simpson Up by 2

Tim Simpson of Atlanta blistered the Green Island Country Club for his second straight six-under-par 64 Friday to take a two-stroke lead in the second round of the $350,000 Southern Open golf tournament at Columbus, Ga.

Simpson’s 36-hole score of 128 was a tournament record and the lowest 36-hole total on the PGA Tour since the 1983 Texas Open.

Clarence Rose, who shot a 66 for a two-day total of 130, was Simpson’s closest pursuer.

First-round leader Joey Sindelar shot a 68 and was three shots back of Simpson.

Japan’s Masao Hara shot a six-under-par 66 to tie Miller Barber for the lead at 135 in the $230,000 Grand Slam Senior championship at Narita, Japan.

Barber, 54, winner of four senior tournaments in the United States this year, rolled in a 26-foot eagle putt on the 494-yard, par-five 16th hole en route to a 68.

Gay Brewer was one stroke off the pace after shooting a 67.

Britain’s Mark James picked up four shots on South African Nick Price and tied for the lead at 137 midway through the $178,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at St. Nom La Breteche, France.

James shot a five-under-par 67. Price had a 71.
