Redskins Try to Snap Slump Against Cards
Quarterback Joe Theismann, under fire for the Washington Redskins’ poor early showing, says critics should look elsewhere before hanging the team’s failure around his neck.
“We had a pretty good run of about 60-odd games and now, suddenly, just four games into this season there are a lot of people who want to run me out of town,” Theismann said. “I have been placed under a microscope and I don’t think that’s very fair. I just can’t agree with that. The whole team has gone bad. It’s a total effort.”
Prior to this season’s 1-3 start, the Redskins, with Theismann at quarterback, won 47 of their last 60 games. The stretch includes three first-place finishes in the NFC Eastern division, two conference titles and a Super Bowl victory.
The Redskins will attempt to pull out of their slump tonight when they face the St. Louis Cardinals (3-1).
“I don’t believe any of that stuff that just because I’m 35 now I can’t play anymore,” Theismann said. “Physically, I’m perfectly healthy. Mentally, I’m excited about the future.”
The Redskins have fallen into the division’s cellar with their once feared offense accounting for just 46 points in four games.
The Redskins haved turned the ball over 12 more times than they have taken it away from opponents.
