Insulation continued to smolder long after a fire was extinguished at a solar electric generating station near Daggett, and San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Dan Wurl said it may do so for some time. “It’s a possibility,” he said, “that they may just let it burn itself out.” Fire broke out Sunday at the 13.8-megawatt Solar Electrical Generating System plant, known as SEGS I, where parabolic mirrors are used to convert heat to electric energy. The flames were quickly extinguished, but insulation in the plant’s hot oil holding tank continued to smolder. It was the plant’s second fire in less than a year of operation. The first blaze broke out a week after the plant was dedicated, last Feb. 14.
