Orioles Sign Weaver to One-Year Contract

Share

Earl Weaver, who led the Baltimore Orioles to four American League pennants but stumbled after returning to the club in midseason, agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract for 1986.

Weaver had a 53-52 record this season after replacing Joe Altobelli on June 14. His lifetime record is 1,407-971, and he has a winning percentage of .592. He ranks 17th all-time for most managerial victories.

Contract terms were not disclosed, but it is believed that Weaver agreed to an offer from owner Edward Bennett Williams worth about $600,000.

Weaver won six Eastern Division titles with the Orioles from July 1968 through 1982 and led the club to four American League pennants and one World Series championship.

He has won 100 games five times, tying him with Connie Mack for second on the all-time list.
