Far West Roundup : Faaola Leads Hawaii to Win Over Wyoming, 26-18
Nuu Faaola ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as the University of Hawaii won its first game this season with a 26-18 Western Athletic Conference victory over Wyoming in Laramie.
A furious fourth-quarter comeback saw Wyoming score twice to pull within five, 23-18, but then the Cowboys roughed the kicker on a missed field goal attempt with 4:34 to play. The penalty gave Hawaii a first down and led to a 42-yard Kerry Brady field goal that gave the Rainbow Warriors a 26-18 lead they held onto.
Hawaii (1-1 in the WAC and 1-3-1 overall) scored first on a six-yard run by Faaola on the team’s first possession but missed the conversion as Wyoming intercepted a Greg Tipton pass.
The Cowboys then drove 77 yards but had to settle for Andy Cottingham’s field goal when quarterback Randy Welniak was sacked for a loss after rolling to his right from the 3-yard line.
Hawaii, which had little trouble running or passing against Wyoming (0-3, 1-5), went ahead, 13-3, early in the second quarter on an eight-yard Tipton pass to David Dyas.
Although a field goal pulled Wyoming to within seven just before halftime, Hawaii scored 10 third-quarter points on a Brady field goal and Faaola’s second touchdown for a 23-6 lead.
Colorado State 45, New Mexico 28--Fullback Steve Bartalo rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night to pace the Rams to a WAC rout over the defenseless Lobos in Albuquerque.
Bartalo scored on three short runs inside the 2-yard line.
Bartalo, a walk-on at CSU three years ago, tied the conference single-game record with 47 carries set by New Mexico’s Mike Williams in 1977.
