Southwest Roundup : Houston Is Routed by Texas A

Texas A&M; Coach Jackie Sherrill said his Aggies made a “lot of mistakes” Saturday.

Fortunately for them, they got the mistakes out of the way in the first quarter and went on to rout Houston, 43-16, in a Southwest Conference game at College Station, Tex.

“Considering the adversity we had early in the game, I was pleased with the way we responded and bounced back,” Sherrill said.

“In the first part of the game, we made a lot of mistakes.”

Houston scored on a game-opening 62-yard drive and added a safety on an A&M; miscue for a 9-0 lead.

But it was all A&M; after that.

Jimmie Hawkins piled up 151 yards on returns and scored on an interception to key A&M;’s comeback. And Anthony Toney scored two touchdowns for A&M; on a 13-yard run in the second quarter and a one-yard plunge in the third.

Texas A&M;’s 43 points were the most the Aggies have scored against Houston.

The Aggies improved to 4-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the SWC, while the Cougars dropped to 1-4-0 and 0-2-0.

Rice 34, TCU 27--At Houston, Mark Comalander threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Rice to its first Southwest Conference victory since 1981.

The Owls were not assured of victory, however, until they stopped a fourth-down plunge by TCU’s Tony Jeffery at the Rice three with 57 seconds left to play.

The Owls earlier this season broke an 11-game losing streak with a victory over Lamar. At the time it was the nation’s longest major college losing streak.

Rice, 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SWC, had not won a conference game since beating Baylor, 17-14, on Nov. 14, 1981. TCU dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the SWC.

The Owls had lost 26 conference games in a row.

Comalander threw touchdown passes of 7, 63 and 6 yards, completing 18 of 27 for 321 yards.

Freshman Stephan Howland led TCU with 147 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries before leaving the game in the third quarter because of problems with the heat.

TCU’s David Rascoe, starting his first college game, finished with 12 completions in 21 attempts for 293 yards.

Arkansas 30, Texas Tech 7--At Lubbock, Tex., halfback James Rouse raced 34 yards for one touchdown and set up another with two big runs for the No. 6-ranked Razorbacks.

Rouse got his touchdown in the opening moments of the second half and later contributed runs of 23 and 18 yards to set up Greg Thomas’ one-yard touchdown.

Rouse gained 145 yards in 14 carries as the Razorbacks (5-0) hiked their Southwest Conference record to 2-0, and dropped the Red Raiders to 3-3 and 0-3.

Arkansas never permitted the Red Raiders to penetrate Razorback territory.
