A relaxed Ivan Lendl advanced to the quarterfinals of the $280,000 Australian Indoor championships at Sydney, Australia, Thursday with a 7-6, 6-1 second-round victory over Lloyd Bourne.

Lendl, who swapped jokes with Bourne during the 1-hour 27-minute match, said afterward: “I like him a lot, he’s a nice guy and very funny. I enjoyed the match. Although I was not really settled in the first set, I played much better in the second, and just want to keep rolling.”

However, the scene wasn’t as light-hearted at night, when a bomb scare caused a one-hour delay in the second-round match between fifth-seeded Henri Leconte of France and Brian Teacher. The 7,500 fans in attendance were forced to leave the stadium along with players and officials.

When the bomb scare proved to be a hoax and the players returned, Leconte completed a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 victory.

In another night match, third-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador routed Darren Cahill, 6-0, 6-2, in 43 minutes, allowing the 20-year-old Australian only 22 points.

Earlier, Chip Hooper defeated Mike Bauer, 6-4, 6-4.

At Tokyo, Glenn Michibata of Canada upset top-seeded Tim Mayotte, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the $195,500 Japan and Asian Open championships.

Michibata, former Pepperdine University star, is ranked 163rd in the world. Mayotte, who played at Stanford, is ranked 14th.

Third-seeded David Pate, the defending champion, was also upset, losing to Jonathan Canter of Beverly Hills, 7-5, 6-2.

In other third-round matches, No. 2-seeded Scott Davis defeated Vince Van Patten, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 4 Jimmy Arias beat Russell Simpson of New Zealand, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Second-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch and third-seeded Steffi Graf, both of West Germany, won second-round matches in a women’s $175,000 tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.
