Tennis Roundup : Lendl Is Closing In on Australian Title

Ivan Lendl rolled relentlessly toward the final of the $280,000 Australian Indoor championships Friday night at Sydney, Australia.

The top-seeded Lendl, aiming to win his first-ever tournament in Australia, took just 70 minutes to beat sixth-seeded Ben Testerman, 6-3, 6-1, setting up a semifinal match against fourth-seeded Paul Annacone.

Annacone won his quarterfinal match over Chip Hooper, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Fifth-seeded Henri Leconte of France earned a berth in the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador.

Leconte will meet eighth-seeded John Fitzgerald, who defeated fellow Australian Simon Youl, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

At Tokyo, Glenn Michibata, a Canadian of Japanese ancestry who scored a major victory over top-seeded Tim Mayotte in the quarterfinals, eliminated Greg Holmes, 6-4, 6-4, to move into the semifinals of the $195,500 Japan and Asian Open championships.

Second-seeded Scott Davis beat Sammy Giammalva, 6-4, 6-2, and third-seeded Jimmy Arias turned back Matt Anger, 6-3, 6-3.

John Carlsson of Sweden beat Jonathan Canter, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1.

In the women’s semifinals, top-seeded Argentine Gabriela Sabatini eliminated defending champion Lilian Drescher of Switzerland, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, and moved into the final against Linda Gates, who turned back Laura Gildemeister of Puerto Rico, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Top-seeded Pam Shriver defeated Czechoslovakia’s Iva Budarova, 6-2, 6-2, to move into the semifinals of a women’s $175,000 Grand Prix tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.

In other matches, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany beat Barbara Gerken, 6-4, 6-3, and third-seeded Steffi Graff of West Germany downed Lisa Bonder, 7-6, 6-2.

At Basel, Switzerland, Wojtek Fibak of Poland upset third-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Swiss Indoor tournament.

In another upset, Hans Schwaier of West Germany ousted eighth-seeded Heinz Gunthardt of Switzerland, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
