Pass-Happy Eastern Washington Faces CS Long Beach

Cal State Long Beach and Eastern Washington, football teams that throw more than 40 passes a game each, will play at 2 p.m. today at Veterans Stadium. It will be Homecoming for the 49ers after five straight road games.

Long Beach, its three-game winning streak broken last week by Tulsa, 37-35, is 3-3.

Eastern Washington, a Division I-AA team, had won five straight before losing last week to Nevada Reno, 31-25. In that game, EWU quarterback Rick Worman threw 67 passes, completing 27 for 301 yards.

Worman has passed for an average of 303 yards.

Long Beach quarterback Doug Gaynor is averaging 276. But Gaynor has completed 70% of his passes and Worman 53%. Worman has thrown 14 touchdown passes, three more than Gaynor.

Long Beach ran effectively against Tulsa. Martin Sartin gained 110 yards in 16 carries, and Brian Browning had a 55-yard touchdown run.
