The number of jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area has grown 116% in the 20-year period between 1962 and 1982, according to an Assn. of Bay Area Governments report. Raymond Brady of the association said the rapid growth was linked “to the swift expansion of the high-tech manufacturing industries” in the area, adding that the job increases came in services and retail trade, finance, insurance and real estate businesses. However, Brady noted that the rapid economic growth carried with it both benefits and problems. “It gives people opportunities for new jobs and income, but it also means we have to deal with highway congestion, air pollution, lack of housing and infrastructure problems.”
