Fuller Breeders’ Cup Fields Assured

Owners of 110 horses have made preliminary payments for the seven Breeders’ Cup races at New York’s Aqueduct Nov. 2, assuring the $10 million series of much fuller fields than last year.

The payment deadline was Monday, and the tentative fields were announced Tuesday. Pre-entry fees for 102 of the horses ranged from $10,000 to $30,000, depending on the race, and eight horses were made eligible for higher fees--between $40,000 and $120,000--because they hadn’t been nominated earlier.

It will eventually cost the owners of these eight supplemented horses between $120,000 and $360,000 if they actually start their horses in the races.

Last year at Hollywood Park, where the Breeders’ Cup was held for the first time, 77 horses were entered and 68 started. Although fields for each race were limited to 14 horses, none reached capacity and the largest number of starters was 11.

This year, an international panel of racing secretaries will have to determine whether some of the horses can run. The first nine horses in each race are determined by a point system based on their performances in races throughout the year. The remaining five are selected by the panel.

The panel’s selections in the Juvenile Stakes, the Sprint, the Mile and the Turf will be announced today. Only nine horses are eligible to run in the Distaff Stakes and the Classic, and there are 12 for the Juvenile Fillies. The purse for the Classic is $3 million, the Turf is worth $2 million and the others are $1 million races.

Trainer Wayne Lukas, whose barn leads the country in purses this year with a total of more than $7.5 million, has a record 10 horses eligible.

They are Ketoh and Louisiana Slew in the Juvenile; Arewehavingfunyet, Family Style and Twilight Ridge in the Juvenile Fillies; Mt. Livermore and Pancho Villa in the Sprint, and Alabama Nana, Lady’s Secret and Life’s Magic in the Distaff.

It will cost Ed Anthony, Vanlandingham’s owner, a $360,000 supplementary fee to start his horse in the Classic. The other supplementals and their fees are Tasso in the Juvenile, $120,000; Committed in the Sprint, $200,000; Rousillon in the Mile, $120,000; Dontstop Themusic and Isayso in the Distaff at $120,000 each, and Greinton and Pebbles in the Turf, $240,000 each.
