The supervisor of football officials for the Big Ten said he doesn’t think the league’s referees are intimidated by Michigan’s Bo Schembechler or any other coach.
Gene Calhoun of Madison, Wis., said he disagrees with Iowa Coach Hayden Fry, who said he was upset that Schembechler wasn’t penalized for going onto the field during Iowa’s 12-10 victory over the Wolverines last Saturday. Fry contended that Schembechler intimidates officials and they’re afraid to penalize him. Calhoun, however, said officials treat all coaches alike.
Fry called Schembechler’s sideline actions “nickel and dime” and “rinky-dink stuff” that could be curbed by a couple of 15-yard penalties.
