South Pacific Quake

WASHINGTON —
An earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale struck an area near Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey reported Tuesday. The quake was centered about 1,200 miles northwest of Brisbane, Australia, and 100 miles southeast of Port Moresby. There were no initial reports of damage.
