A 24-year-old security guard at a waterfront Newport Beach nightclub was shot to death early Friday morning following an alleged dispute over parking, and police said they are holding as a suspect a janitor who works in the building.

William A. Girand, 24, of Long Beach was shot several times in the upper body about 2 a.m. outside Promises nightclub, 3333 W. Coast Highway, and died at the scene, Officer Tom Little said.

Robert Duesler, 22, of Newport Beach, who works as a janitor in the bank building above the club, was arrested a short time later on suspicion of murder, Little said. He was being held Friday on a no-bail warrant.

Little said witnesses told police that Girand and Duesler had argued over Duesler’s attempt to park in the nightclub’s lot when he arrived for work. Little said Duesler left the parking lot and returned later with a .38-caliber pistol.

After the shooting, Little said, Duesler went inside the bank, where he was later arrested.
