Ailing Jan Hopes to Play for Fullerton Against Fresno State

Senior quarterback Kevin Jan of Cal State Fullerton has broken ribs, a cracked tailbone and a knee injury that has kept him out of practice for almost two weeks, but he hopes to start today when the Titans play Fresno State at 1:30.

“I’ve never been hurt this bad before,” Jan said. “I can deal with the other stuff, but the knee will need surgery after the year. We’ll just tape it up and I’ll go as far as I can.”

If that turns out not to be far, Titan Coach Gene Murphy has two freshmen, Tony Dill and Carlos Siragusa, in reserve. Dill, a scrambler, is a 5-foot 11-inch, 180-pounder, who didn’t start playing quarterback until last year at Mt. Miguel High School in San Diego. He will probably get the first shot. If he can’t move the team, then Siragusa, a strong-armed 6-4, 200-pounder from San Diego’s Sweetwater High will lose his redshirt year.

A quarterback change in the middle of what has been called a conference showdown is not exactly part of Murphy’s plan for success. The defending Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.-champion Titans (2-4 overall, 2-1 in conference) can stay alive in the race with a win over Fresno (6-0-1, 4-0).
