Middleweight boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler has a strained back--not a career-threatening ruptured disk, as feared--and can resume training in two or three weeks, his doctor said. But his broken nose, which caused postponement of the Nov. 14 bout with John Mugabi, will keep him from contact for about six weeks.

There was no word when the Mugabi fight--half of a doubleheader with a Thomas Hearns-James Shuler bout--might be rescheduled. Promoter Bob Arum told the Boston Herald that if the back injury was not serious, he hoped to reschedule the Mugabi bout early next year and perhaps go ahead with the Hearns-Shuler fight Nov. 14, then match the winners later in the year.
