St. John Bosco High School exploded for 22 points in the first four minutes of the second quarter Friday night, then cruised to a 29-7 Del Rey League victory over visiting Crespi.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Braves (3-5 overall, 1-2 league). Crespi fell to 0-3 in league play and 4-4 overall.

Statistically, the second quarter has been the most productive for the host Braves this season. St. John Bosco had outscored its previous seven opponents by a ratio of 2-to-1 in the second period, only to make crucial mistakes in the final 24 minutes that usually proved fatal.

Although the team committed several of those same miscues again Friday night, they were of little consequence because Crespi was busy making its own share of errors. In a game that also included a variety of dropped or overthrown passes, bad snaps, and an array of bobbles and slips, the teams combined for nine turnovers, including five interceptions and a blocked punt that resulted in a Brave touchdown.

St. John Bosco struck first when quarterback Jim Sterner fired 22 yards to tight end Monte McDermott with 11:15 to go in the second period.

Two minutes later, Brave linebacker Nick Pantuso rushed in untouched to block a Mark DiCristina punt in the Celt end zone. Teammate Mitchell Perez recovered for a second score.

An interception by Jon Prukop that was returned 26 yards to the nine yard line set up St. John Bosco’s final score of the quarter. Three plays later, at the 7:15 mark, Mark Rael bowled over from the one yard line.

Crespi senior quarterback Randy Redell survived at least a half dozen dropped pass attempts and accounted for all but 105 total yards gained by the Celts. He passed for 194 yards (22 of 37, 3 touchdowns) and ran for 45.
