Big Ten Roundup : Michigan State Puts Gophers in a Hole, Holds On for 31-26 Victory

Lorenzo White rambled for 172 yards and three first-half touchdowns to lead Michigan State to a 31-26 victory over Minnesota Saturday at East Lansing, Mich.

The three touchdowns by White helped stake the Spartans (4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten) to a 31-10 halftime lead. The Golden Gophers (5-3, 3-2) rallied in the second half behind redshirt freshman quarterback Alan Holt, who was filling in for the injured Rickey Foggie.

Minnesota got within 31-26 with two minutes left, but Michigan State was able to run out the clock.

White, a sophomore, rushed 49 times. That gave him a school-record 289 carries this season. The record was 259 carries by Eric Allen in 1971.

Wisconsin 31, Indiana 20--Larry Emery rushed for a career-high 188 yards in 28 carries as Wisconsin snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Indiana at Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin improved to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten. Indiana is also 4-4 and 1-4.

Wisconsin used a powerful running game to overcome a 14-0 second-quarter deficit. The Badgers gained 296 yards rushing, 231 in the second half.

The Badgers took their first lead when Mike Howard passed five yards to Joe Armentrout, then hit Scott Sharron for the two-point conversion to make it 21-14 in the third quarter.

Purdue 31, Northwestern 7--Jim Everett threw for two touchdowns and sophomore James Medlock ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns to lead Purdue at West Lafayette, Ind.

Everett completed 23 of 31 passes for 292 yards and played only one series in the second half after the Boilermakers opened up a 28-0 halftime lead.

Purdue improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Northwestern, who has not won in West Lafayette since 1950, is 3-5 and 1-4.
