Oceanside
A car traveling south on Interstate 5 Sunday night struck a guardrail near the exit to Hill Street in Oceanside, slicing the vehicle in half, killing the passenger and injuring the driver, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Levert White, 45, of San Diego died on impact, according to Jerry Bohrer, CHP spokesman. The driver, Edwin Smith, 24, also of San Diego, was listed in good condition Monday at UC San Diego Medical Center with minor injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said. Bohrer said Smith will be booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter when he is released from the hospital.
The car was traveling about 60 m.p.h. about 8 p.m. Sunday when Smith apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit the metal barrier separating the exit ramp and the freeway, Bohrer said.
