The Chinese took a six-point lead in the team competition at the World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal, with Olympian Li Ning atop the individual standings after compulsory exercises. The United States team is third.

Li, who won two golds, three silvers and a bronze in the 1984 Olympic Games, scored 9.90 on the rings and 9.80 on the floor and the parallel bars for a total of 58.30 out of a possible 60.0

The U. S. men, winners of the team gold medal at the 1984 Games, suffered through scores as low as 8.00 and then lost virtually all hope of doing well in the standings when Dan Hayden, considered third-best on the team, dislocated his left ankle on his dismount from the high bar.
