According to Barry Switzer, the ideal Oklahoma quarterback is a freshman who started the season on the bench.

Jamelle Holieway, in his first year out of Los Angeles Banning, ran up a school-record 324 yards in total offense Saturday to spark No. 7 Oklahoma to a 51-6 Big Eight victory over Missouri.

It was Holieway’s third collegiate start since replacing Troy Aikman, who broke his leg against Miami.

“It’s amazing the way he’s played,” Oklahoma Coach Switzer said of Holieway. “I expect him to be perfect, but I realize he isn’t. He’s everything I want.”

Holieway rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 8 of 17 passes for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns. His total yards broke Jack Mildren’s record of 323 yards set in 1971.

“Imagine just playing in three games and already setting a record,” Switzer said. “I could say I’m surprised but I won’t. He’s an excellent passer; that’s what set him apart.”

Holieway, a native of Carson, Calif., remained humble about his accomplishments.

“I’m just glad we got the win,” he said. “The offensive line blocked superbly. It’s a team game. Everybody just executed to the fullest.

“I’m just glad that we did throw the ball fairly well. As the weeks progress, I think I’m getting better and better.”

Missouri Coach Woody Widenhofer said his Tigers have something in common with Iowa State and Kansas.

“We got hammered by Oklahoma just like them,” Widenhofer said. “Oklahoma has got a great, great football team. They are a lot better than Nebraska.”

The Sooners improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Eight, while Missouri fell to 1-8 and 1-4. The win was Oklahoma’s first over Missouri in Columbia since 1979.

Oklahoma rushed for 509 yards and converted four Missouri fumbles into touchdowns. Missouri had six turnovers.
