Tennis Challenge of Champions Tourney Is Moving to Atlanta, Newspaper Reports

A tennis tournament featuring eight of the world’s top players, competing for more than $1 million, will move from Las Vegas to Atlanta, according to a published report.

The AT&T; Challenge of Champions, an event which began last year in Las Vegas, will be played Jan. 6-11 in The Omni, it was reported in Wednesday’s editions of The Atlanta Constitution.

The paper said the field would include John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander, Anders Jarryd, Yannick Noah, Kevin Curren and Andres Gomez. A doubles field will be selected later.

McEnroe won the event’s $200,000 first prize last year. By comparison, Lendl won $187,000 for his U.S. Open title he captured earlier this year.

Singles will be played in a round-robin format with four players in each division. A point will be scored for each win, and the top point winners in each division will play in the final.
